Malondiadehyde(MDA) is the most popular marker used for lipid peroxidation and free radical damages, Our study with serum lipids was designed to compare the dose effect of alginic acid isolated from brown algae(Undaria pinnatifida) on anti-aging action. The experimental diets prepared with sodium alginate of 0, 3, 6 and 9% were fed ad libitum to SD male rats for 16 weeks, and dose effects of alginic acid on body weight, blood glucose, trigyceride and cholesterol levels, LDL and HDL-Cholesterol levels, and malondialdehyde(MDA) content were investigated. (1) Body weight gain in addition of 3, 6 and 9%-alginic acid remarkably decreased in 122.31g (89.6%), 95.84g(70.2%) and 69.11g(50.6%) compared with 136.49g(100.0%) of no addition-control group, respectively(p<0.01¡0.005). (2) Serum cholesterol levels in addition of 3 and 6%-alginic acid were effectively decreased 84¡85% and 74¡80% compared with 100% of control group (p<0.005). (3) Triglyceride levels in serum of addition of 6 and 9%-alginic acid were effectively decreased in ranges of 61 to 80% compared with 100% of control group (p<0.005). (4) LDL-Cholesterol levels in addition of 6 and 9%-alginic acid does not influence, significantly, but HDL-Cholesterol level was the most effectively increased in addition of 6%-alginic acid (p<0.005). (5) Inhibitory effect of malondialdehyde (MDA) formation in serum lipids were the most effectively in addition of 3 and 6%-alginic acid (p<0.005). The data on body weight, triglyceride and cholesterol levels, LDL and HDL-Cholesterol levels, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content provide further evidences that alginic acid related as a modulator of anti-aging action in serum lipids.
